How to Calculate Flooring Waste
The flooring calculator adds one or more rectangular floor zones, applies a waste percentage to the total area, then divides by the box coverage and rounds up to whole boxes.
Use with: Flooring calculator
Measurement Checklist
- Split the floor plan into rectangles when the room is L-shaped or connected to another space.
- Measure each zone length in metres.
- Measure each zone width in metres.
- Give each zone a label that will make the result readable.
- Enter the waste percent you want applied after the raw area is summed.
- Read the m2 coverage from one unopened flooring box.
- Enter an optional price only if you want the page to multiply rounded boxes by your own entered value.
Worked Example
- Zone 1 is 4 m x 5 m = 20 m2.
- Zone 2 is 2 m x 1.5 m = 3 m2.
- Raw area = 20 + 3 = 23 m2.
- With 10% waste, waste-adjusted area = 23 x 1.1 = 25.3 m2.
- With 2.5 m2 per box, boxes required = ceil(25.3 / 2.5) = 11.
Common Mistakes
- Measuring the longest overall dimensions of an irregular room and treating empty corners as flooring.
- Applying waste to each zone by hand and then adding another waste percent in the calculator.
- Entering plank or tile dimensions instead of the box coverage printed on the flooring box.
- Leaving out closets, thresholds, or connected rectangular areas that are part of the same flooring run.
- Treating the optional cost field as live pricing. It only multiplies by the value you type.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Each zone is treated as a rectangle: length x width.
- Raw area is the sum of all zone areas.
- Waste is applied after total raw area is calculated.
- Boxes are rounded up to whole boxes.
- The calculator does not model layout direction, board pattern, stairs, damaged pieces, thresholds, or supplier pack variation.
