How to Measure for Floor and Wall Tiles
The tile calculator can be used for floor or wall context. It adds rectangular surface areas, applies waste, converts tile dimensions from millimetres to metres, rounds individual tiles up, then rounds boxes up.

Measurement Checklist
- Choose floor or wall so the result label matches the project.
- Split the surface into rectangular areas.
- For floor areas, measure length and width in metres.
- For wall areas, measure wall width and tile height coverage in metres.
- Enter tile width and tile height in millimetres.
- Enter the waste percent you want applied before tile rounding.
- Enter the whole number of tiles per box from the box label.
Worked Example
- One floor area is 4 m x 5 m = 20 m2.
- With 10% waste, waste-adjusted area = 20 x 1.1 = 22 m2.
- A 300 mm x 600 mm tile is 0.3 m x 0.6 m = 0.18 m2.
- Tiles required = ceil(22 / 0.18) = 123.
- With 8 tiles per box, boxes required = ceil(123 / 8) = 16.
Common Mistakes
- Entering tile size in metres when the calculator expects millimetres.
- Measuring a wall from floor to ceiling when tile will stop at a lower height.
- Subtracting openings or fixtures inconsistently. This V1 only adds rectangular areas that you enter.
- Using boxes required as exact layout guidance. The calculator does not place tiles or calculate cuts.
- Expecting grout quantity. The calculator includes a grout and joint note but does not estimate grout.
Assumptions and Limitations
- Each area is treated as a rectangle: length x width.
- Total surface area is the sum of all rectangular areas.
- Waste is applied after total surface area is calculated.
- Tile area uses width x height after converting millimetres to metres.
- Tiles are rounded up to whole tiles, then boxes are rounded up to whole boxes.
- Grout and joint width affect layout planning, but this V1 does not calculate grout quantity or make installation claims.
